Getting around

The medina is best explored on foot. Its lanes are narrow and winding and phone maps are not always reliable, so allow time to get a little lost.
Petit taxis are useful for trips beyond the medina. Agree the fare before you set off, or ask for the meter.
The mountains and the desert are easiest to reach with a driver or on an organised tour.
Expect offers of help with directions. A polite, firm “no, thank you” is fine.

The southern quarter, with the Saadian Tombs and the Bahia Palace close by.

The new town, with wide avenues, galleries and cafés.

Leafy and calm, between the medina and Gueliz.
Palmeraie
Palm groves on the edge of the city, at a slower pace.

Good to know

Currency: Moroccan dirham.
Plugs: Types C and E (two round pins), 230V.
Language: Arabic and Amazigh (Berber). French is widely used, and English is common in visitor areas.
Tipping: Small tips for guides, drivers and service are customary. Bargaining is expected in the souks, so take your time and keep it friendly.
Dress: Clothing that covers shoulders and knees is respectful, especially in the medina. Most mosques are not open to non-Muslim visitors.
